One of China's famous Daoist mountains and the preeminent center of Daoism during the Tang Dynasty.

During the Japanese invasion of China in the 1930's the Japanese bombed the temples on Maoshan and eventually overran the mountain. As a result most of the old temple sites are just piles of fractured stone. Today (December, 2001) on Maoshan there is still one old Daoist who remembers this time. He says he escaped to the the local village when the marauding Japanese arrived.
