Just to the south of the small city of Tianshui in southern Gansu Province. This Buddhist cave grotto is one of the most impressive in China, along with Dunhuang, Longmen, Datong, and Dazu. Maijishan means Haystack Mountain and not only does the mountain resemble a haystack, but the country roads in the area are dotted with real haystacks. This is haystack country! The earliest grottos date back to the Northern Wei Dynasty 535-557.

During the Tang, Du Fu lived south of here, escaping the ravages of the An Lushan Rebellion.
