Jutting up on the south bank of the Changjiang seven kilometers southwest of Maanshan City, this rock used to be called Bull Islet Rock 牛渚磯 Niuzhuji because a gold bull is said to have appeared here in ancient times. The present name was adopted during the period of the Three Kingdoms (220-280) because the area abounded in colorful stones. 采石磯 Caishiji is one of three famous such rock cliffs along the banks of the Changjiang River, the other two being Chenglingji in Yueyang, and Yanziji in Nanjing.
