Burned to the ground by Yoritomo Yoshitsune in 1189. Recently some of the old temple sites of the Fujiwara in Hiraizumi have been excavated and a new Motsuji now sits here. The grounds surrounding a lovely lake, designed to represent the Buddhist Pure Land heaven, are a good place to brood on the past, as Basho did when he visited in 1689 (see his haiku).
